The history of The Killeen Daily Herald dates back to June 1890 when it was established as a weekly publication called The Killeen Herald by W.E. Bennett. Over the years, ownership of the newspaper changed hands multiple times until Bennett repurchased it in 1903 with the vision of transforming it into a daily newspaper. However, this transition proved unsuccessful, leading to the sale of the paper to J.T. Carter, who reverted it to its original weekly format. Under Carter's guidance as editor and publisher for 43 years, the newspaper thrived.

Meanwhile, shortly after selling The Killeen Herald, Bennett launched another publication called the Killeen Messenger as a semi-weekly newspaper. After a year, Carter acquired the Messenger and merged it with The Killeen Herald, leading to the creation of The Killeen Daily Herald and Messenger. In 1953, the newspaper transitioned into a daily publication and was renamed The Killeen Daily Herald.

In 1953, a pioneer in communications, Frank W. Mayborn, acquired The Killeen Daily Herald and remained at its helm for over three decades, steering it through significant social and technological changes. Throughout its more than 100 years of operation, The Killeen Daily Herald has evolved from a small weekly paper to a prominent metropolitan daily with approximately 20,000 in daily circulation and around 26,000 on Sundays.
